The Machinists Union, otherwise known as the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, who work at Textron Aviation, has been on strike for the last month as they voted on September 21 to reject Textron’s offer for a new deal and officially passed strike plans. The strike formally began in Wichita on September 23. However, just one month after the strike began, the two entities have reached an agreement as the union has agreed to the terms laid out in Textron’s latest offer. This new offer is highly appealing to the union as it details coverage for 5,000 members across three different Textron campuses in Wichita.

Machinists Union members will be back at work this Wednesday, October 23.

Spokespeople from both the Union and Textron Aviation have confirmed that the deal has been ratified with a five-year agreement. This means this is the contract that will exist between the two parties until September 2029. Union representatives expressed excitement over how quickly this was able to be solved. In recent years, major strikes have most often lasted for several months, so many union members were nervous that this strike would be no different. Now that they have reached an agreement after just one month, workers are eager to get back to work.

Reportedly, there were a few main issues and complaints that workers had with Textron’s first contract proposal.

The first main issue the workers had was connected to increases in insurance premiums. These increases massively cut into proposed wage increases, making the wage increase nearly null. Furthermore, the initial contract proposed reductions in money that Textron would give employees to handle medical expenses and retirement benefits. Essentially, the main points of contention boiled down to Textron not focusing in enough on the health and well being of their employees.

The new contract directly addressed the issues that the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers had with the original one.

The new contract that has been agreed upon by the union supports a wage increase o 31% over the next five years. Additionally, there will be cost of living adjustments with a range of $700-$1,500 per year. The contact also provides a guaranteed lumpsum payment of $3,000 every year for the next five years. Lastly, there will only be a 3% annual increase in the low and high deductible health insurance plans.
